Visiting the lighthouse requires some physical effort and careful packing. You need to prepare for steep stairs, coastal heat, and strict security rules. This guide explains what to expect when bringing children of all ages to the five-acre historical campus.
How much are Tybee Lighthouse tickets for kids?
Children ages 5 and under enter for free. Tickets for youths aged 6 to 17 cost $12.
Adult admission is $14. You must purchase your tickets on-site when you arrive. The historical society does not pre-sell passes online. Admission includes access to the tower, three keeper cottages, and the museum.
Is the 178-step climb safe for children?
The historic iron staircase is structurally secure, but the 178-step climb requires physical stamina.
The spiraling stairs ascend 145 feet inside the brick tower. Use the window landings to let kids rest during the climb. Summer heat inside the tower gets intense, so bring a reusable water bottle for everyone. The outdoor observation catwalk often has strong winds. Hold onto young children tightly and secure loose hats.

What will older kids enjoy at the site?
Older kids usually enjoy exploring the Tybee Museum inside Battery Garland.
This museum sits inside a massive poured-concrete coastal defense fort built in 1898. Military & Local History Kids can walk through the deep, echoey ammunition magazines that once stored heavy artillery shells. The site also features Euchee Indian exhibits showing how native tribes used local coastal resources.
Can families bring backpacks or diaper bags?
Backpacks of any size are strictly prohibited on the lighthouse grounds.
The security policy bans all backpacks, large beach bags, and extra-large purses. You must leave these items in your car. Rules & Bag Policy Use a small cross-body bag or fanny pack for your essentials. Food, gum, and drinks other than water are also banned on the property.

What is the dress code for kids?
All visitors must wear shirts and shoes at all times.
Many families walk over from nearby North Beach. If you do, ensure everyone covers their bathing suits completely before entering the campus. Comfortable closed-toe walking shoes with good grip are highly recommended for the steep and historic stair climb.
Where should families park?
Your admission includes two hours of free parking in the dedicated lighthouse lot.
This free parking makes getting in and out with kids very easy. If your family wants to stay on the north end of the island afterward, you must move your vehicle. You can relocate to the public pay lot located right across the street.
