Before you climb the 178 stairs to the observation deck, you need to know what items are allowed. The historic site strictly enforces its bag policies and dress codes at the entrance. Review these rules to avoid having to return items to your vehicle.

What is the Tybee Lighthouse bag policy?

Backpacks of any size, beach bags, and extra-large purses are strictly prohibited on the grounds.

You cannot bring large or rigid bags into the site. This includes large camera bags and oversized totes. To carry your essentials, pack a small cross-body bag or a fanny pack instead.

Is there a dress code for the lighthouse?

Yes. You must wear a shirt and shoes at all times while on the five-acre campus.

Many visitors walk over from North Beach, but swimwear alone is not allowed. You must wear a proper beach cover-up over bathing suits. Comfortable closed-toe walking shoes with good grip are highly recommended for safely climbing the iron stairs.

Can I bring food or drinks?

You may bring a reusable water bottle, but all other food and drinks are banned.

Gum and outside meals are strictly prohibited anywhere on the property. Summer heat inside the 145-foot brick tower can be intense, so carrying plain water is a good idea.

Are cameras and tripods allowed?

You can bring a smartphone or small camera, but tripods and monopods are not allowed.

Large rigid camera bags are also banned. If you want to take photos from the outdoor catwalk, securely hold your phone. Drones are not permitted to fly over the station during operating hours for safety reasons.

Does the lighthouse close for bad weather?

The historical society does not issue refunds for weather closures. If storms approach, plan to visit the indoor Tybee Museum at Battery Garland or the Keepers' Cottages until it passes.
