Climbing the 145-foot brick tower requires physical effort. Since the historic iron staircase gets extremely hot in the summer, choosing the right time to visit matters. Planning your arrival carefully helps you avoid intense humidity and unexpected weather closures.
When is the best time of year to visit?
The ideal seasons to visit are spring (March through May) and fall (September through November).
During these months, temperatures and humidity are low enough to make the 178-step climb comfortable. You can explore the five-acre campus, including the Keepers' Cottages, without battling severe Georgia heat.
When is the best time of day to climb in summer?
If you visit during the summer, plan to arrive early in the morning.
Summer heat inside the brick tower becomes intense by midday. Lightweight, breathable clothing is highly recommended. Climbing early also helps you secure a spot in the dedicated lighthouse parking lot.

How does weather affect the lighthouse catwalk?
Adverse weather or high winds will immediately close the lighthouse tower and outdoor catwalk.
Afternoon thunderstorms are common during the summer months. Staff will shut down the catwalk without warning for safety. The historical society does not issue refunds for weather-related closures.
What days is the lighthouse closed?
The entire five-acre site is closed every Tuesday year-round.
The attraction also shuts down for major holidays, including Thanksgiving and Christmas. Plan your Tybee Island itinerary around these scheduled closures.

What should I pack for the climb?
Bring a reusable water bottle, comfortable closed-toe walking shoes, and sun protection.
Only water is allowed on the grounds. Backpacks and large bags are strictly prohibited, so use a small cross-body bag instead. The observation deck is exposed, so wear sunscreen and sunglasses.
How long does the lighthouse climb take?
Most visitors need 10 to 15 minutes to climb the spiral staircase.
Take your time and use the window landings to rest and cool down. Once at the top, you will want 15 to 20 minutes to view the Atlantic Ocean and Savannah River.
